북한이탈주민 지체장애인의 남한 사회로의 삶의 여정에 관한 내러티브 탐구1)

A Narrative Inq uiry i nto the Life J ourney o f North Korean Refugees with Physical Disabilities in South Korean Society

본 연구는 북한이탈주민이자 지체장애인이라는 교차적 정체성을 지닌 이들의 삶의 경험을 심층적으로 탐색하고, 그 의미를 서사적으로 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 Clandinin과 Connelly(2000) 가 제시한 3차원 내러티브 탐구(시간성, 사회성, 공간성) 분석 틀을 적용하였으며, 연구참여자 3명을 대상으로 생애사에 기반한 심층면담을 실시하고, 그들의 삶의 이야기를 서사적으로 재구성하였다. 연구 결과, 참여자들은 북한에서의 구조적 억압과 비가시화, 탈북이라는 전환, 그리고 남한사회에서의 제도적 장벽과 낙인 속에서 주체적으로 자아를 재구성하며 살아가고 있었다. 이들의삶은 ‘몸으로 써 내려간 여정’, ‘목소리로 외치는 여정’, ‘공간에 색을 칠하는 여정’, ‘이념을 넘어선갈망하는 실존의 공간’으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 이들의 경험을 조명하고, 초기 정착단계의 언어⋅문화 적응 지원, 통합 복지 체계 구축, 심리⋅사회적 지원 서비스의 필요성을 제언하였다.

This study explores the lived experiences of North Korean refugees with physical disabilities, who embody intersectional identities, and examines the meanings of their life trajectories through a narrative inquiry approach. Guided by the three-dimensional narrative inquiry framework of temporality, sociality, and place proposed by Clandinin and Connelly (2000), the study conducted life history-based, in-depth interviews with three participants and reconstructed their life narratives. The findings reveal that the participants actively redefined their identities while navigating structural oppression and invisibility in North Korea, the transformational process of defection, and institutional barriers and stigma within South Korean society. Their lived experiences were thematically conceptualized into four narrative journeys: “A Journey Written on the Body,” “A Journey of Raising One’s Voice,” “A Journey of Coloring Spaces,” and “An Existential Space Longing Beyond Ideology.” Based on these findings, this study suggests the necessity of providing tailored support for North Korean refugees with physical disabilities, including programs for linguistic and cultural adaptation during early settlement, the establishment of integrated welfare systems, and the development of psychosocial support services.
