The present paper puts forth the concept of climate-infrastructure, drawing on research in the domain of infrastructure humanities, with the aim of facilitating critical thinking about the Anthropocene. The paper defines infrastructure as “matter built by humans that enable the movement of other matter,” thereby expanding the scope to include not only material but also immaterial foundations that support all human social life and characterizing infrastructure as (relatively) immobile, invisible, and uncontrollable. According to the aforementioned speculations concerning the definition, scope, and characteristics of infrastructure, it is argued that climate in the Anthropocene should be conceptualized as infrastructure rather than as an environment, highlighting the implications of “being built by humans.” Furthermore, the present paper posits that the conceptualization of climate-infrastructure enables the application of recent research methodologies from the humanities and social sciences on infrastructures to the climate crisis of the Anthropocene, thereby facilitating a more radical politicization of climate.
