Difference, Affordance, and Correspondence : Living With Disability

본 연구는 정체성 정치와 시민권 담론에 머물러 있는 기존 장애 연구의 한계를 넘어, 신유물론적 관점을 통해 장애를 재사유하고자 한다. 특히 인류학자 팀 잉골드(Tim Ingold)의 어포던스(affordance)와 조응(correspondence) 개념을 중심으로 장애인과 함께 살아가는 사회적 과정을 탐구한다. 어포던스 개념을 통해 장애를 개인의 신체적 결핍이 아닌 환경이 특정 신체에 제공하는 행위 가능성의 차이로 재정의한다. 조응 개념을 통해서는 장애인이 기술, 환경, 비인간 존재와 상호 조율하며 새로운 행위 가능성을 창출하는 생성적 과정을 분석한다. 신유물론적 접근은 장애를 ‘결핍된 존재’에서 ‘차이’와 ‘이질성’을 지닌 존재로 재정의하며, 장애인의 경험이 인간-비인간-물질의 어셈블리지를 재구성하는 촉매가 될 수 있음을 보인다. 마지막으로 대학 내 경사로 설치와 장애 학생 지원사례를 통해, 어포던스와 조응 개념이 포용적 환경을 구축하는 실천적 원리가 될 수 있음을 제시한다.

This study aims to rethink disability through a new materialist perspective, moving beyond the limitations of existing disability studies focused on identity politics and citizenship discourse. In particular, it explores the social processes of living with people with disabilities through anthropologist Tim Ingold's concepts of affordance and correspondence. Through the concept of affordance, disability is redefined not as an individual's physical deficiency but as a difference in action possibilities that the environment provides to specific bodies. Through the concept of correspondence, it analyzes the generative process in which people with disabilities mutually attune with technology, environment, and non-human entities to create new possibilities for action. The new materialist approach redefines disability from ‘deficient beings’ to beings with ‘difference’ and ‘heterogeneity’, showing that the experiences of people with disabilities can serve as a catalyst for reconfiguring human-nonhuman-material assemblages. Finally, through cases of ramp installation and support for students with disabilities on campus, it demonstrates that the concepts of affordance and correspondence can become practical principles for building inclusive environments.
