저항의 장으로서 정신질환 서사의 재조명 : 정신건강 회복을 중심으로

Mental Illness Narratives as Sites of Resistance : A Reconsideration through the Lens of Recovery

이 글은 정신질환 서사 출간 붐이라는 사회 현상에 주목하여, 서사 수행을 둘러싼 서사적 현실과 그 과정에 쟁점으로 등장한 “회복”에 대한 서사를 분석한다. 성공적 치료를 결말로 삼지 않는 정신질환 서사들은 회복 서사에 대한 사회적 선호와 병의 예후에 대한 모호한 결말로 엇갈린 평가를 받는다. 이들 서사는 첫째, “정신적으로 아픈 채” 자기 삶을 서사화하는 공적 발화 주체들의 등장, 둘째, 새로운 이야기장의 형성이라는 사회 변화를 추동한다. 이러한 서사적 현실로 인해, 정신질환 서사에서 이야기된 회복 경험과 자기 이해에 관한 서사를 깊이 있게 탐구하는 작업이 요구된다. 주제분석 결과, 회복에 관한 서사는첫째, 개인의 의지와 노력 문제로 여기는 사회적 편견에 저항, 둘째, 약물 치료를 통해 정신건강 문제를 관리해야 하는 신경화학적 자아의 분투, 셋째, 증상 감소나 기능 회복으로만 국한하기보다 관계적으로 회복을 사고한다. 몸과 마음은 심리적·문화적·경제적 관계망속에서 다른 몸들, 물질과 얽힘 속에 살아가기 때문이다. 이 글은 아픈 이들의 관점에서 회복 경험을 다층적으로 이해하여, 몸을 체현된 존재로서 사회적 저항의 장소이자 원천으로읽어내고자 한다.

This study examines the recent publishing boom of mental illness narratives in South Korea, focusing on how these works articulate the narrative reality surrounding mental health recovery. Mental illness narratives without definitive recovery endings often evoke ambivalent responses, reflecting tension between social expectations of cure and the ambiguity of ongoing illness. Non-linear recovery narratives signal broader cultural shifts—the emergence of narrators who speak from within ongoing illness and the creation of spaces that unsettle normative ideals of healing. These narratives demand close examination of how recovery and selfhood are represented. Thematic analysis reveals three central aspects of recovery narratives: (1) resistance to the social prejudice that frames recovery as a matter of personal willpower and effort; (2) the struggles of the neurochemical self compelled to manage mental health through medication; and (3) a relational reconceptualization of recovery beyond symptom reduction or functional restoration. This article interprets the ill body as both an embodied site of vulnerability and a generative locus of social resistance, understanding recovery as a multilayered experience that redefines the relations between self, and society.
