이 글은 정신질환을 가진 사람들과 사회 안에서 비폭력적으로 공존할 수 있는 가능성과그 조건을 모색한다. 사회적 공존은 단순한 관용이나 동화가 아니라, 차이를 인정하면서도 함께 살아갈 수 있는 방식을 의미한다. 특히 이 글은 정신장애인을 우리 사회의 시민으로 인정할 수 있는가 하는 질문을 중심으로 논의를 전개하며, 그들이 공적 공간에서 존재할 권리를 확보하는 것이 핵심임을 주장한다. ‘지하철 빌런’으로 불리는 사건을 중심으로, 대중과 미디어가 어떻게 정신질환자를 낙인찍고, 사회적 규범을 위반한 존재로 간주하며배제하는지를 비판적으로 분석한다. 정신병의 의료화는 사회적 규칙 위반을 물화(物化) 하는 것이며, 이를 통해 정신질환자에 대한 사회적 통제를 정당화한다. 이 글은 비트겐슈타인과 고프먼, 사스 등의 통찰을 빌려, 정신질환을 이해할 수 없다는 믿음 자체가 사회적신념이며, 그 믿음이 변하지 않는 한 정신질환자와의 공존은 어려움을 겪을 수밖에 없다고 지적한다. 결론적으로 이 글은 정신질환에 대한 이해 가능성은 그들을 이해 불가능한존재로 보는 기존의 믿음—즉 삶의 방식—을 바꾸는 데서 출발해야 하며, 이를 통해 정신장애인과의 진정한 사회적 공존이 가능하다고 제안한다.

This article explores the possibility and conditions for nonviolent coexistence with mentally-challenged people in society. Social coexistence means not merely tolerance or assimilation, but finding ways to live together while recognizing differences. This article centers its discussion on the question of whether mentally-challenged people can be recognized as citizens in our society, arguing that securing their right to exist in public spaces is key. Focusing on incidents labeled ‘subway villains,’ it critically analyzes how the public and media stigmatize people with supposedly mental problem and exclude the violators of social rules. The medicalization of mental illness reifies violation of social rules, thereby justifying social control over those with mental illness. Drawing on insights from Wittgenstein, Goffman, and Sass, it points out that the very belief that mental illness is incomprehensible is itself a social belief. As long as this belief remains unchanged, coexistence with the mentally ill will inevitably face difficulties. In conclusion, it proposes that the possibility of understanding mental illness must begin with changing the existing belief—that is, the way of life—that views them as incomprehensible beings. Only then can true social coexistence with mentally-challeged people become possible.
