퀴어-환자주의와 함께 화병(火病) 살아내기 : 2030 퀴어페미니스트의 의료 실행 땜질

Navigating Hwabyung (火病 ) with Queer-Patientism: Tinkering with Medical Practices among Queer Feminists in Their 20s and 30s

이 글은 2030 여성･퀴어의 구체적 경험이 화병을 퀴어링(queering)하는 경로를 살핀다. 여기서 퀴어링은 정상성의 권위 아래 당연하게 받아들여지곤 했던 규범의 성립과 작동을되묻는 인식 및 실천을 포괄한다. 연구참여자 가지, 귤, 달래, 산, 양배추, 양파, 연근, 예진, 오디, 유자, 참외는 양/한방을 넘나들며 화병 의료 실행을 땜질(tinkering)해 왔다. 이들은자신의 화와 병을 퀴어하게 연결 짓는 이야기를 통해 화병에 대한 기존 규범을 가로질러그 다층성을 드러냈다. 환자의 경험을 탈정치화, 개인화해 온 치료라는 틀을 비틀어 활용하면서, 참여자들의 이야기는 능동성, 정상성과 더불어 화병 환자의 특성이라 일컬어지는 피해자성의 구성 역시 되묻고 있다. 이들의 실천은 질병과 함께 살아가는 몸･마음의복잡함을 삶의 조건으로 삼는다는 점에서 아네마리 몰이 제안한 환자주의(patientism)와만난다. 참여자들은 화병을 살아냄으로써 퀴어-환자주의를 요청한다. 이들의 삶 이야기는 퀴어정치와 의료 윤리 양쪽에서, 긍정성에만 매몰되지 않을 불확정성의 틈새를 낸다. 환자주의 자체가 퀴어함에도 앞에 ‘퀴어’를 붙이는 이유는 이 틈새를 강조하기 위해서다.

This article examines how queer feminists in their 20s and 30s navigate Hwabyung through queering it. Here, queering refers to epistemic and practical contraventions that unsettle norms upheld by normativity. Eleven participants—Gaji, Gyul, Dallae, San, Yangbaechu, Yangpa, Yeongeun, Yejin, Odi, Yuja, and Chamoe—tinkered with medicine across biomedical and traditional Korean medical contexts. Through narratives linking anger (hwa) and illness (byung), they traversed established norms surrounding Hwabyung and revealed its multiplicity. By twisting therapeutic frameworks that traditionally depoliticized and individualized patients' experiences, their stories question the construction of agency, normativity, and victimhood, often framed as typical of Hwabyung. In line with Annemarie Mol's patientism, these practices embrace the entangled complexities of living with illness as inherent conditions of life. Participants' narratives open spaces of indeterminacy, resisting reduction to mere positivity both in queer politics and medical ethics. While patientism is inherently queer, the prefix “queer” highlights and extends these spaces. By navigating Hwabyung, the participants embody queer-patientism and call for its broader recognition and practice.
