암, 생명권력, 그리고 의료 자본주의 : <Wit>와 <50/50>에 나타난 의료 체계 비판과 인간 존엄의 가능성

Cancer, Biopower, and Medical Capitalism : Medical System Critique and the Possibility of Human Dignity in <Wit> and <50/50>

본 연구는 암을 주제로 한 영화 <Wit>(2001)과 <50/50>(2011)을 분석하여 현대 의료체계에서 작동하는 생명권력과 의료 자본주의의 양상을 비판적으로 조명한다. 푸코의 생명권력 개념과 니콜라스 로즈의 신자유주의 의료 체계 비판 이론을 이론적 틀로 삼아, 병원이라는 공간, 언어적 통제, 감정의 비정치화 등 미시 권력의 작동 방식을 시각적･서사적분석을 통해 추적한다. <Wit>에서는 환자의 존재가 의료화된 죽음 속에서 해체되는 과정을, <50/50>에서는 자기관리와 관계를 통해 존엄성을 재구성해가는 주체의 여정을 중심으로 의료 윤리의 문제를 드러낸다. 두 영화는 질병이 단지 생물학적 현상이 아닌, 권력과자본, 주체성과 윤리의 교차점에서 구성된다는 점을 보여준다. 본 연구는 서구 영화에 나타난 담론을 바탕으로 한국 의료 체계에도 적용 가능한 비판적 성찰의 가능성을 제시하며, 인간 중심의 의료 윤리 회복을 위한 문화적 상상력을 확장하는 데 기여한다.

This study critically examines how biopower and medical capitalism operate in the contemporary medical system through an analysis of the cancer-themed films <Wit>(2001) and <50/50> (2011). Employing Michel Foucault's concept of biopower and Nikolas Rose's critique of neoliberal medical governance as its theoretical framework, the study explores the micro-politics of hospital space, linguistic control, and the depoliticization of emotion as manifested in visual and narrative elements. Wit illustrates the disintegration of the patient's subjectivity within a medicalized death, while 50/50 highlights the protagonist's reconstruction of dignity through self-management and relationships. These films demonstrate that illness is not merely a biological fact but a phenomenon shaped at the intersection of power, capital, subjectivity, and ethics. By extending this discourse to the South Korean medical context, the study contributes to a culturally grounded critique of healthcare systems and calls for a renewed focus on human-centered medical ethics.
