Amended PLM Workflow and Architecture by Integrating PDP and LCA Toward the Sustainable Product Development

The development of sustainable products is enabled not only by the use of sustainable materials or components but also by the adoption of sustainable development processes and tools. If any one of the detailed tasks within the product development process lacks consideration for sustainability, it becomes difficult to ensure the overall sustainability of the final product. Therefore, new definitions for embedding sustainability elements into each stage of product development, as well as concrete supporting tools, are required. This study proposes a Sustainable Product Development Process (SPDP) that integrates the Product Development Process (PDP) and Lifecycle Assessment (LCA), and develops the workflow, framework, and architecture of a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system to support this integration. The types of detailed tasks constituting the proposed SPDP are derived through a literature review of existing PDP and LCA standards, and the sequential relationships between these tasks are identified based on the types and contents of data input and output for each task. Furthermore, based on the identified sequence of detailed tasks, the study defines and develops the functions, conceptual framework, and architecture of a PLM system that supports SPDP. This research is significant in that it proposes ways to enhance the sustainability-related functionalities of PLM systems, which are core tools for product development in companies, and provides strategic information management responses for companies aiming to improve sustainability in line with emerging trends.
