Purpose: This study aims to explore the lived experiences of finswimming athletes to understand their motivations for con-tinued participation and the qualities that define elite athletes. Unlike previous research focused on physical performance, this study takes a humanities-based approach to examine self-management, interpersonal relationships, and lifestyle organi-zation. The findings are intended to help coaches better understand their athletes, guide younger finswimmers, and provide a foundation for future qualitative and quantitative research in finswimming. Research design, data, and methodology: A narrative approach was used to develop a framework that outlines the identified themes. Consistent with a narrative ap-proach, this study employed purposive sampling and in-depth interviews. Five outstanding fin swimmers were recruited for this study. They are registered athletes of the Korea Underwater Pin Swimming Association. Results: The experiences of finswimming athletes were found to reflect deeply personal meanings—such as life as a whole, learning through life, vitality, hardship, livelihood, and life challenges. Moreover, for these athletes, the experience of finswimming also held significance as a sociocultural medium for fostering social relationships and fulfilling social roles. Conclusions: Athletes view finswimming as life itself—sacrificing rest, social life, and stability to pursue peak performance and personal growth through sport. Finswimming shapes their identity and life journey, with the hope that this deep commitment will support a successful transition after retirement.
