A Study on Plagiarism among College Students in an AI Environments

Purpose: In particular, the development of AI technology is having a great impact on the education and learning, assignments, and research of university students. Therefore, it is necessary to develop metrics that take into account advances in AI technology. The purpose of this study is to investigate the awareness and actual situation of plagiarism and copyright infringement among college students who are familiar with and use various devices the most, and to consider educational measures to utilize the right AI environment through proper education on plagiarism. Research design, data and methodology: The study will conduct an online survey of current students at four-year colleges and universities across the country from December 2 to December 31, 2024. 347 samples were used in the analysis. Conclusions: This study shows that most students do not receive clear guidance from their instructors about plagiarism when using AI in their assignments. It also appears that many learners do not consider that using AI in their assignments could be a plagiarism issue. Instructors will need to remind learners that they need to be trained to verify and validate their work when using AI environments for assignments. Therefore, it is urgent to develop guidelines for the ethics of assignments in the rapidly developing AI environment.
