Purpose: This paper aims to present a comprehensive set of research ethics principles that graduate students must follow when writing theses and journal articles. It focuses on preventing common ethical violations such as plagiarism, unjust duplicate publication, improper authorship designation, inaccurate citation, unauthorized data use, omission of funding acknowledgments, and nondisclosure of conflicts of interest. Research design, data, and methodology: A qualitative content analysis was conducted of the relevant legal precedents and international guidelines issued by COPE and ICMJE. The analysis extracted normative standards, frequent violation patterns, and preventive strategies tailored for graduate-level research ethics compliance. Results: The study identified eight key areas of ethical compliance for graduate students: prevention of plagiarism and self-plagiarism, distinction between permissible secondary publication and unjust duplicate publication, contribution-based authorship qualification, accurate citation and reference management, data ownership and approval processes, proper funding acknowledgment, full disclosure of conflicts of interest, and adherence to IRB/IACUC approval and research record management. Case studies demonstrated that procedural errors, even if unintentional, can lead to sanctions. Conclusions: Embedding ethical awareness and practice from the start of research projects, coupled with transparent communication among supervisors and collaborators and compliance with institutional and international publishing standards, effectively prevents misconduct, safeguards academic integrity, and strengthens trust in scholarly output.
