Purpose – This study compares the ripple effects of the medical device industry and the pharmaceutical and bio industries, which are the core pillars of the healthcare industry, on the national economy through industry-related analysis. Design/Methodology/Approach – Among the latest data as of 2025 from the National Statistical Office KOSIS, an industry classification table with an extension of 2022 from the 2020 survey table was used. Based on this, after extracting each industry corresponding to the healthcare medical device industry and the pharmaceutical and bio industries in the basic sector (380), the two industries were reorganized from the sub-categories (165) to the middle categories (83) and the major categories (33) in order to make the two industries (34) by incorporating them into the major categories, respectively. Findings – As a result of the analysis, the two industries showed a clear difference in terms of production ripple effects The production inducement coefficient of the healthcare medical device industry was larger than the average of the entire industry, but the production inducement coefficient of the pharmaceutical and bio industries was smaller than the average of the entire industry. Iin terms of added value, both industries showed strong ripple effects. Research Implications – This study shows that the healthcare medical device industry and the pharmaceutical and bio industries are growing economically through different channels despite having a common goal of ‘national health, diagnosis, and treatment’.
