본고는 인지의미론적 관점에서 한·중 공간 척도 형용사 ‘짧다/短’의 은유적 개념화 양상을 대조 분석하였다. 먼저 영상 도식적 은유 면에서 ‘짧다/短’의 은유적 개념화 양상을 살펴보았다. ‘짧다’는 연결 영상 도식적 은유와 그릇 영상 도식적 은유를 사용해서 은유 의미가 확장되었다. 반면에 ‘短’의 용례에서는 이런 은유적 개념화 양상이 보이지 않아서 비대응 양상이 나타났다. 다음으로 존재론적 은유 면에서 ‘짧다/短’의 은유적 개념화 양상을 살펴보았다. ‘짧다/短’은 ‘시간’, ‘분량’, ‘감정’, ‘평가’, ‘지능(知能)’ 등의 추상적인 개념을 구체적인 개체로 보는 존재론적 은유로 개념화되는 과정에서 공통점이 나타나는 동시에 세밀한 차이점이 나타나기도 했다.
From the perspective of cognitive semantics, this paper makes a comparative analysis of the metaphorical conceptualization of the Korean and Chinese space scale adjective ‘짧다/短’. Firstly, the paper observes the metaphorical conceptualization of ‘짧다/短’ from the perspective of image model metaphor. The metaphorical meaning of ‘짧다’ can be realized through the use of connective schema metaphor and container schema metaphor, but this kind of metaphor is not found in the example of ‘短’, thus presenting an asymmetry phenomenon. Next, the paper observes the metaphorical conceptualization of ‘짧다/短’ from the perspective of ontological metaphors. ‘짧다/短’ uses ontological metaphors such as ‘time is an individual’, ‘weight is an individual’, ‘emotion is an individual’, ‘evaluation is an individual’, and ‘intelligence is an individual’ to realize the metaphorical conceptualization, which has similarities and subtle differences.
