On Yang Zhu’s Political Thought

This article aims to explore in depth the political thought of Yang Zhu, a prominent thinker of the Warring States period. It begins by reviewing Yang Zhu’s life and the broader social background of the era, which provides the historical context necessary for understanding his thought. The study then focuses on analyzing the core aspects of Yang Zhu’s political philosophy, including his well-known doctrine of individualism, his attitude toward political power, and his distinctive views on the rule of law and morality. In addition, this paper examines the internal tensions and limitations of Yang Zhu’s ideas, especially through comparative analysis with other major intellectual schools of the Warring States period. Furthermore, it investigates the practical influence of Yang Zhu’s political thought on the society of his time, along with its contemporary relevance and reinterpretation in modern political theory.
