다르브 주바이다가 서아시아 순례 공동체문화에 끼친 영향

The Influence of Darb Zubaydah on the Formation of Pilgrimage Community Culture in West Asia

본 연구는 압바스조 제5대 칼리파 하룬 알라시드의 왕비 주바이다가 정비한 다르브 주바이다(Darb Zubaydah)가 서아시아 순례 공동체문화의 형성과 확산에 미친 영향을 고찰한다. 서아시아는 고대부터 종교·문화·정치의 교차로로 기능하였으며, 메카와 메디나로 향하는 순례는 이슬람공동체(움마)의 통합과 정체성 확립에 핵심적 역할을 하였다. 특히 무함마드의 메카 정복 이후 제도화된 핫즈는 다양한 부족과 계층을 초월한 평등성과 연대감을 구현하였으며 순례길은 학문·상업·문화 교류의 장으로 자리매김하였다. 주바이다는 쿠파에서 메카까지 약 1,300km에 달하는 경로를 정비하면서 50여 개의 급수소와 정거장을 설치하였다. 저수지·우물·모스크·마나라 등의 시설은 순례자의 안전과 편의를 보장했을 뿐 아니라 신앙·문화·예술 교류의 장으로 기능하였다. 본 연구는 이러한 다르브 주바이다를 사회적, 종교적, 문화·예술적, 정치·경제적 차원에서 분석함으로써이 길이 단순한 순례 통로를 넘어 이슬람 문명사의 통합과 공동체 정신을 보여주는 복합적 유산임을 밝히고자 한다.

This study examines the impact of Darb Zubaydah, the pilgrimage route renovated by Zubaydah, wife of the fifth Abbasid caliph Hārūn al-Rashīd, on the formation and expansion of pilgrimage community culture in West Asia. Since antiquity, the region has functioned as a crossroads of religion, culture, and politics, and the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina played a central role in consolidating the identity and unity of the Islamic community (umma). In particular, after the conquest of Mecca by the Prophet Muhammad, the institutionalized ḥajj embodied equality and solidarity that transcended tribal and social divisions, while the pilgrimage routes became avenues for scholarly, commercial, and cultural exchange. Zubaydah oversaw the renovation of a route stretching nearly 1,300 kilometers from Kufa to Mecca, establishing more than fifty watering stations and caravanserais. Facilities such as reservoirs, wells, mosques, and manāra not only ensured the safety and convenience of pilgrims but also served as centers of religious, cultural, and artistic interaction. By analyzing Darb Zubaydah from social, religious, cultural-artistic, political, and economic perspectives, this study demonstrates that the route was more than a simple passage for pilgrimage; it was a multifaceted heritage that embodied the integration of Islamic civilization and the enduring spirit of community
