This study analyzed academic articles on Karate, Kendo, Kyudo, Naginata, Budo, Sumo, Judo, Iaido, Jujitsu, and Taijiquan (2000–2023), focusing on subjects, methods, tools, research years, and academic fields, complemented by expert interviews in Sumo, Judo, and Kendo. Results show Judo and Kendo leading quantitative studies, while most other disciplines favored qualitative and humanities-based approaches. Kendo often used motion analysis, Judo surveys, and Sumo and Naginata case studies. Research activity peaked differently by field but showed recent declines in Taijiquan and Kyudo. Disciplinary emphases ranged from biomechanics (Kendo) and philosophy (Budo) to physiology (Judo, Karate, Iaido) and education or history (Taijiquan, Jujitsu, Hapkido). Expert interviews highlighted the need for greater youth and female engagement, broader recreational practice, improved referee standards, and strategies for globalization.
