평택군수 오횡묵의 철도 경험: 근대성과 전근대성의 공존과 절합(節合)

Tradition on the Rails: O Hoengmuk’s Railway Experience and the Persistence of Premodern Order in the Early 20th century Korea

구한말 한반도 철도에 대한 연구는 열강의 이권 침탈과 식민 지배의 도구로서의 성격에 주목하는 시각, 또는 철도를 근대성과 문명화의 상징으로 긍정적으로 평가하는 시각으로 전개되어 왔다. 그러나 최근에는 전통과 근대가 단절된 것이 아니라 상호 연속되고 중첩된 현실로 해석 하는 관점이 대두되고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 문제의식 아래, 전근대 엘리트였던 오횡묵의 철도 경험을 통해 근대성과 식민성, 그리고 전근 대적 질서의 지속성을 함께 고찰하였다. 충청남도 평택의 군수였던 오 횡묵이 1904~1905년에 남긴 일기를 분석 대상으로 삼아, 그가 철도와 기차를 어떻게 수용했으며 일본인들과 어떤 방식으로 교류했는지를 구 체적으로 살펴보았다. 그는 공무 수행을 위한 도내 이동에서 기차를 적극적으로 활용하는 한편, 전통적 이동수단인 가마를 병행하였으며, 서 울 왕래 시에는 경부선과 경인선, 전차, 인력거 등 다양한 교통수단을 이용하며 근대적 이동 방식에 적응해 나갔다. 철도 건설 현장과 터널을 직접 관찰한 그는 근대 기술의 정밀성과 효율성에 깊은 감탄을 표했으 며, 철도 개통 이후 지역에 유입된 일본인들과 활발히 교류하면서 근대 문물과 세계정세에 대한 정보를 습득하였다. 그러나 동시에, 그는 기차 를 탈 때 관속과 가마를 대동하고 신분적 위계를 유지하는 등 전근대적 질서의 실천을 지속하였다. 이는 근대 교통 공간에서도 여전히 전통적 위계가 작동하고 있었음을 시사한다. 결국 오횡묵의 철도 경험은 철도 라는 근대 문물이 전근대성과 절합되어 작동하던 조선 사회의 복합적 현실을 생생히 보여주는 사례라 할 수 있다.

Research on Korean railways during the late Joseon period has generally developed along three lines: as a means of imperial encroachment and colonial domination, as a positive symbol of modernity and civilization,and, more recently, as a place where tradition and modernity coexistedand interacted. This study examines O Hoengmuk, a premodern elite andPyeongtaek magistrate, focusing on how his experiences with railroads reflect the intertwining of modernity and premodern social orders. The study uses his 1904–1905 diary as a primary source. The study analyzes how O Hoengmuk adopted the railroad as a practical tool for administrative duties while continuing to rely on traditional means, such as palanquins and official retainers. During his travels to and from Seoul, he used modern transportation, such as trains, trams, and rickshaws, demonstrating his adaptability to new technologies. He also expressed admiration for the precision and efficiency of railway construction and actively engaged with Japanese railroad officials and settlers to learn about the modern world. However, his continued use of palanquins and his assertion of status while traveling by train illustrates how premodern hierarchies persisted even within modern transportation spaces. O Hoengmuk’s case reveals how modern technology was introduced and accommodated within existing traditional frameworks. It offers a vivid example of the articulation of modernity and premodernity in early 20th-century Korean society.
