형용사 ‘높다/高’는 차원 형용사 중에서 상대적으로 높은 사용 빈도를 보이는 다의어이기 때문에 은유 의미 연구의 기초 조건을 만족하며 연구의 가치성이 크다. 선행 연구에서는 ‘높다/高’의 공간 의미, 확장 의미, 그리고 확장 영역에 대한 분석이 향후 관련 연구에 큰 의미가 있다. 그러나 선행 연구는 ‘높다/高’의 은유적 의미의 확장 과정에서 사용하는 인지 기제, 의미의 확장 원인을 깊이 분석하지 못하다는 점이 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 ‘높다/高’의 공간적 의미를 분석하였고, 이러한 공간적 의미가 위-아래 지향적 은유를 통해 추상적 영역으로 확장된 양상을 살펴보았다. ‘높다/高’는 [많음은 위이다], [좋음은 위이다], [힘을 갖는 것은 위이다], [흥분한 감정 상태는 위이다]라는 지향적인 은유를 사용하여 은유적 의미를 개념화한다. 또한 공간 개념이 수량, 평가, 힘, 감정 등 여러 가지 추상적인 영역으로 확장되는 과정에서 공통점과 차이점을 찾아냈다. 이외에도 ‘높다/高’의 은유적 의미가 확장하게 된 원인을 다양한 측면에서 분석하였다.
Since the adjective ‘Nopta/Gao(high)’ is a polysemous word with a high frequency of use in dimensional adjectives, therefore, it satisfies the basic conditions for the study of metaphorical semantics and has significant research value. Previous studies have analyzed the spatial meaning, extended meaning, and extended areas of ‘Nopta/Gao(high)’, which are of great significance for future research in this field. However, previous studies have not deeply analyzed the cognitive mechanisms employed in the process of expanding the metaphorical meaning of ‘Nopta/Gao(high)’ and the reasons for the expansion of meaning. Therefore, this paper analyzed the spatial meaning of ‘Nopta/Gao(high)’ and examined how this spatial meaning is extended to the abstract realm through Up-Down orientational metaphors. We conceptualize the metaphorical meaning of ‘Nopta/Gao(high)’ using upwardly oriented metaphors such as [MORE IS UP], [GOOD IS UP], [FORCE IS UP], and [EXCITED EMOTIONAL STATE IS UP]. We also find commonalities and differences in the extension of spatial concepts to several abstract domains, including quantity, evaluation, power, and emotion. In addition, we analyze the reasons for the expansion of the metaphorical meaning of ‘Nopta/Gao(high)’ in several ways.
