한국에서 ‘연꽃’이라 하면 ‘蓮’이라는 한자를 떠올린다. 그런데 중국에서는 연꽃과 관련하여 ‘荷’, ‘蓮’, ‘芙蓉’, 芙蕖 등 다양한 명칭으로 불린다. 그리고 ‘蓮’이라는 글자는 수생식물에만 국한하여 쓰인 것이 아니라 초본식물이나 목본식물에도 다수 사용되었다. 그러므로 중국에서 최근 출판된 식물도감을 중심으로 ‘荷’, ‘蓮’, ‘芙蓉’字가 들어간 명칭을 찾아 특징을 나열하고 연관성을 찾아보았다. ‘荷’字가 속한 식물명칭에서는 형태적으로 상호 뚜렷한 연관성을 찾아보기 힘들었으나, 荷는 잎을 의미하는 ‘藿’과 음의 전이로 보인다. 그리고 ‘蓮’字가 속한 다른 식물들은 여럿 연관성을 찾아볼 수 있었는데, 대다수 꽃의 형태가 비슷하면 ‘蓮’字를 활용하여 이름을 지었고, 일부는 종자가 비슷한 모양에서 연관하여 이름을 지었다. 연꽃이 본래 수생식물이지만, 초본식물이나 목본식물에서도 ‘蓮’字가 들어간 이름을 다수 들어갔는데, 이러한 현상을 시대를 불문하고 앞으로 계속 이어질 것으로 보인다.

In addition, many other plants to which the ‘蓮’ letter belongs were found to be related. and most of them were named using the ‘蓮’ letter when the shapes of flowers were similar. and some of them were named in relation to the similar shapes of seeds. Lotus is originally an aquatic plant. but many names with the ‘蓮’ letter were also included in herbaceous and woody plants. and this phenomenon is expected to continue regardless of the times.
