본 연구는 중국어와 한국어에서 ‘세수(洗手)’의 어휘적 및 상징적 변천을 통시적으로 분석한다. 15세기부터 20세기까지의 역사적 문헌을 통해 ‘세수(洗手)’의 의미가 시간에 따라 어떻게 변화했는지를 탐구하였다. 두 언어 모두에서 ‘세수(洗手)’는 초기에는 단순한 손 씻기라는 신체적 행위를 넘어 도덕적 순결과 의례적 청결을 의미했으나, 20세기에 들어 각 문화의 사회적·역사적 변화를 겪으면서 상이하게 발전하였다. 중국에서는 근대화에도 불구하고 유교적 상징성을 내포한 ‘세수(洗手)’의 전통적 의미가 크게 유지된 반면, 한국에서는 서구화와 근대화의 영향으로 그 상징적 의미가 약화되어 일상적인 위생 행위로서의 실용적 표현으로 의미가 축소되었다. 흥미롭게도, 유교에 대한 비판이 상대적으로 강한 중국에서 ‘세수’의 전통적 의미가 유지된 반면, 유교적 전통을 유지한 것으로 평가되는 한국에서는 그 의미가 약화되었다는 상반된 결과를 보여준다. 본 연구는 문화적 변화가 언어에 미치는 영향을 조명하며, 동아시아 언어권 내에서 어휘적 변천 과정을 심층적으로 이해할 수 있는 중요한 통찰을 제공한다.
This study conducts a diachronic analysis of the lexical and symbolic evolution of the Chinese character term ‘세수(洗手)’ in both Chinese and Korean languages. By examining historical texts from the 15th to the 20th centuries, this research explores how the meaning of ‘세수(洗手)’ shifted over time. In both languages, ‘세수(洗手)’ initially signified not only the physical act of washing hands but also moral purity and ritual cleanliness. However, in the 20th century, the term evolved differently due to each culture's socio-historical transitions. Despite modernization, the traditional Confucian symbolism of ‘세수(洗手)’ largely persisted in China, whereas in Korea, the influence of Westernization and modernization weakened the symbolic significance, narrowing its use to a more practical expression of daily hygiene. Interestingly, while Confucian criticism was relatively stronger in China, the traditional meaning of ‘세수(洗手)’ remained intact, in contrast to Korea, where Confucian traditions were more preserved, yet the term's symbolic meaning diminished. This study highlights the impact of cultural transitions on language and provides valuable insights into the lexical transformation processes within East Asian linguistic spheres.
