게임 기반 학습(GBL)은 영어 모국어 학습자들에게 한자를 가르치는 혁신적인 방법으로 학습 동기, 참여도 및 인지 능력을 효과적으로 향상시킬 수 있음을 보여준다. GBL은 한자 인지 시스템, 게임 스토리 및 상호작용 요소를 통합하여 학습 과정을 관리 가능한 과제로 분해함으로써 학습자가 한자의 자형, 의미 및 음운 간의 연관성을 강화할 수 있도록 돕는다. 다양한 한자 게임 시스템은 기초부터 복잡한 한자에 이르기까지 논리적틀을 제공하며, 동시에 다중 감각적 경험과 즉각적인 피드백을 제공하여 학습 효과를 극대화한다. 연구에 따르면, GBL은 학습자의 불안감을 완화하고 내재적 동기를 자극하여 언어 습득과 문화적 이해를 위한 강력한 지원을 제공한다.

This study examines the use of game-based teaching methods in the initial stages of Chinese character learning for English native speakers. Learning Chinese characters presents unique challenges due to their logographic nature, unfamiliar structures, and the absence of direct phonetic or morphological cues for learners accustomed to alphabetic writing systems. To address these challenges, game-based teaching incorporates interactive, playful, and engaging activities that integrate learning with entertainment. These methods leverage cognitive engagement, repetition, and emotional involvement to enhance learners’ ability to recognize, recall, and write Chinese characters. This research explores various game formats, such as digital applications, board games, and classroom role-playing, to determine their impact on learner motivation, retention, and overall language acquisition. Preliminary findings suggest that game-based teaching effectively reduces learner anxiety, increases motivation, and creates a positive learning environment. Additionally, the study discusses the cultural and pedagogical implications of using games to teach a complex writing system like Chinese to non-native learners. By focusing on the beginner stage, this research highlights the potential of innovative and interactive teaching methods to make Chinese character learning more accessible and enjoyable for English native speakers, paving the way for more engaging and effective language instruction.
