An exploration of animal personification metaphors in Su Shi's poetry from the perspective of cognitive linguistics

본 논문은 인지언어학적 관점에서 소식 시가 속 동물 의인화 은유를 심층적으로 분석하며, 특히 조류, 수생동물, 곤충류 의인화 은유의 활용과 예술적 효과를 중점적으로 다루었다. 소식은 인간의 감정, 행동, 사고를 동물에게 부여함으로써 동물 형상을 복잡한 감정과 깊은 사상을 전달하는 매개체로 활용하였다. 조류 은유에서는 까마귀, 참새, 제비, 기러기, 꾀꼬리 등을 통해 고독, 상실감, 고결함 등의 감정을 표현하였고, 수생동물 은유에서는 물고기와 자라, 오리, 복어 등에게 인간이 추구하는 바, 쓸쓸함, 예지력 등을 부여하여 자연에 대한 세밀한 관찰과 아름다운 삶에 대한 열망을 드러냈다. 곤충류 은유에서는 누에, 나비, 벌 등에게 인간의 감정을 부여하여 시간의 덧없음과 생명의 덧없음에 대한 감회, 그리고 수고로운 삶에 대한 존중과 연민을 표현하였다. 본문은 인지언어학적 이론을 통해 소식이 어떻게 동물 의인화 은유를 통해 복잡한 감정과 사상을 전달했는지를 밝혀냄으로써, 소식 시가를 이해하는 데 도움을 제공한다.

This paper investigated the animal personification metaphors in Su Shi's poetry from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, focusing on analyzing the application and artistic effects of avian, aquatic and insect metaphors. By attributing human emotions, behaviors, and thoughts to animals, Su Shi transformed animal imagery into a medium for conveying complex emotions and profound ideas. In avian metaphors, Su Shi used birds such as crows, sparrows, swallows, wild geese and orioles to express feelings of loneliness, loss, and nobility. In aquatic metaphors, creatures like fish, turtles, ducks and pufferfish were endowed with human traits such as pursuit, solitude,and foresight, reflecting Su Shi's keen observation of nature and his yearning for a fulfilling life. In insect metaphors, creatures like silkworms, butterflies, and bees were imbued with human emotions, showcasing Su Shi's reflections on the passage of time, the impermanence of life, and his respect and sympathy for diligent labor. Through the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics, this paper revealed how Su Shi employed animal personification metaphors to convey intricate emotions and thoughts, offering insights into the understanding of Su Shi's poetry.
