『英華分韻撮要』를 통해 본 粵語 陰入 분화에 대한 고찰

The Historical Evolution of Lower Yin Entering Tone in Cantonese, as Seen from A Tonic Dictionary of the Chinese Language in the Canton Dialect

1856년에 출판된 선교사들의 월어 문헌인 『英華分韻撮要』에서는 중고 청성모자의 성조를 잘못 표기하여 양입으로 표시한 상황이 존재한다. 罗言发(2022)은 이를 근거로 당시 일부 청성모자가 이미 하음입으로 분화되었을 가능성을 제기하였다. 그는 이것이 선교사들이 하음입을 잘못 인식했기 때문에 이들 한자의 성조를 하음입(33)과 유사한 양입(22)으로 잘못 표기한 것으로 보았다. 본고에서는 『英華分韻撮要』에서 양입으로 표기되었으나 현대 월어에서는 하음입으로 발음되는 한자들을 정리하여 이 문헌이 반영하는 월어 음입의 분화 과정에 대해 보다 포괄적인 고찰을 시도하였다. 또 일부 한자는 하음입으로의 분화 과정에서 점진적인 변화의 특징을 보이는 반면 어떤 한자들은 단어 단위로 분화가 이루어졌음도 지적하였다. 아울러 중고 중국어의 청성모자이나 장모음 운복에서 유래하지 않은 하음입 한자들을 분석하고, 이들의 성조 변화가 동일 성부, 의성어 출현으로 인한 새로운 발음의 출현 및 문백이독 등의 영향을 받았음에 대해서도 논의를 진행하였다.

The 1856 missionary Cantonese document A Tonic Dictionary of the Chinese Language in the Canton Dialect contains instances where the tones of Middle Chinese voiceless initial characters are mistakenly marked as yang entering tone(陽入). Based on this, Luo Yanfan (2022) hypothesizes that some voiceless initial characters had already differentiated into lower yin entering tone (下陰入) by that time. However, since the missionaries did not recognize the emergence of lower yin entering tone, the tones of these characters were mistakenly identified as yang entering tone(22), which has a pitch of tone close to lower yin entering tone (33). This paper collects the characters in A Tonic Dictionary of the Chinese Language in the Canton Dialect that are marked as yang entering tone but are read as lower yin entering tone in modern Cantonese, in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the tonal differentiation process of lower yin entering tone as reflected in the document, based on Luo Yanfan's research. The paper points out that some characters exhibit a gradual differentiation into lower yin entering tone, while others undergo differentiation as words. Additionally, the paper analyzes lower yin entering tone characters that do not originate from Middle Chinese voiceless initials or long main vowel, and argues that their tonal changes are influenced by factors such as the tone of their phonetic component, the overall changes in the literary reading(文讀), and the special differentiation of onomatopoeic words.
