Re-interpreting the Three Yangming of the Shanghanlun Based on the Texts of Jinguiyuhanjing

Objectives : This study aims to interpret the meaning of the three Yangming, a key concept in the Shanghanlun suggested to explain the bianzhenglunzhi system of the Yangming disease pattern. Methods : Texts of the Shanghanlun and the Jinguiyuhanjing were compared and analyzed to expose the difference in editing intentions manifested in their description. Next, the descriptive errors in the Shanghanlun were revealed while menaing of the three Yangming within the Yangming disease pattern bianzhenglunzhi system was discussed in detail as the author's key description of the Yangming chapter in the Jinguiyuhanjing. Results & Conclusion : The three Yangming of Zhangzhongjing was not only suggested as various causes to the formation of excessiveness in the stomach-intestines(胃家實) of the Yangming disease pattern, but as a threefold category of various Yangming disease patterns that ultimately develop into excessiveness in the stomach-intestines(胃家實) from entanglement of the exterior/interior and deficiency/excessiveness. In conclustion, the three Yangming is a key concept to understanding the bianzhenglunzhi system of the Yangming disease pattern. In understanding the accurate meaning of the three Yangming, we can understand why many cold patterns, deficiency and exterior patterns are included in the Yangming chapter alongside heat-excessive disease patterns that are purely interior conditions. Moreoever, the Yangming Wind Stroke and Yangming Cold Stroke are not irrelevent with the three Yangming, but a description of the Weiyang Yangming, one of the three Yangmings which is both deficient and excessive.
