Purpose: This study aimed to explore in depth the stressful situations experienced by nursing students during simulation practice and their coping strategies, in order to provide foundational data for creating more effective simulation learning environments and developing learner-centered educational strategies. Methods: Data were collected from 150 fourth-year nursing students enrolled in universities located in Seoul and Jeolla provinces using a semi-structured questionnaire that included open-ended questions. Qualitative analysis was conducted using Krippendorff’s content analysis method. Results: The major stressors identified during simulation practice included unpredictability of situations and performance pressure, lack of knowledge and preparation, difficulties in teamwork and communication, and burdens related to the environment and system. Coping strategies were diverse, encompassing psychological stabilization techniques, utilization of social support, cognitive strategies, and behavioral responses. Factors that contributed to stress alleviation were social support, self-care and rest, prior preparation and practice, as well as self-affirmation and acceptance. Conclusion: Stress induced during simulation practice arises from multiple factors, and systematic learning environments based on emotional support are essential to alleviate such stress. Learner-centered educational designs that reflect individual characteristics are required, and further research considering various variables is needed to develop more evidence-based and refined educational strategies.
