Analysis of Research Trends Related to Dementia for Nursing Students in Korea

Purpose: This study aimed to identify research trends on dementia among Korean nursing students through a scoping review and to suggest directions for future research. Methods: A total of 23 studies were selected from six domestic databases(RISS, KISS, DBpia, ScienceOn, KoreaMed, and KMBASE) by searching for the keywords “nursing student” and “dementia” in Korea academic journals published between 2014 and 2024. Results: Most studies were published between 2020 and 2024 (60.9%) and in multidisciplinary journals (73.9%). Studies without Institutional Review Board approval accounted for 69.6%, and quantitative designs were predominant (73.9%). Participants across all four academic years were included in 34.8% of the studies, and 78.3% were conducted in a single region. Dementia attitude was the most frequently examined variable (65.2%), with 40% using the Dementia Attitude Scale developed by Cho HO (1999). Experimental studies consistently demonstrated significant improvements in students’ attitudes toward dementia. Conclusion: This scoping review provides an overview of dementia-related research among Korean nursing students. The findings serve as foundational evidence for developing educational programs, interventions, and qualitative studies, thereby contributing to the enhancement of dementia care quality.
