Purpose: This study examined the effects of virtual reality (VR) simulation-based nursing education on learner-centered outcomes. Methods: A review of previous studies was conducted to evaluate the impact of VR education on knowledge, clinical performance, judgment, critical thinking, problem-solving, engagement, and satisfaction. Comparisons with high-fidelity simulation (HFS) and blended approaches were included. Results: VR was effective in enhancing knowledge and clinical judgment, while providing safe practice opportunities for high-risk situations difficult to experience in real settings. It also improved engagement, self-efficacy, and satisfaction. Blended learning with VR and HFS showed greater effectiveness than single methods, strengthening both cognitive and affective competencies. However, variations were noted depending on content quality, learner preference, and technology acceptance, and most studies were limited by small samples and short-term designs. Conclusion: VR simulation is an innovative teaching strategy that promotes active and self-directed learning while addressing limitations of traditional methods. It holds strong potential for adult health nursing and broader nursing education. Future research should develop standardized tools, examine long-term outcomes, and ensure cost-effectiveness and institutional support for sustainable implementation.
