Collective memory and collective future thought are two pivotal dimensions that shape Chinese national identity. This literature review proposes a synergistic mechanism of “arrative integration, emotional connection, and action drive” through which they operate. Collective memory grounds identity in history, answering “where we come from,” while collective future thought orients it through shared visions of “where we are going.” Their interaction—between “the future as after-thought” and “the future as fore-thought”—weaves a coherent “past-present-future” narrative that is essential for national identity. To address current challenges in theoretical localization and methodology, future work must develop localized instruments and diverse methods to effectively forge a strong sense of Chinese national community.
