현대중국어 ‘AP+(的)+NP’ 구조의 생성어휘론적 접근 - 유형강제를 중심으로

A Generative Lexicon Approach to the “AP+(de)+NP” Structure in Modern Chinese: Focusing on Type Coercion

본 논문의 목적은 현대중국어 ‘AP+(的)+NP’ 구조에서 발생하는 의미 모호성 문제를 생성어휘론의 ‘유형강제’ 현상으로 규정하고 그 양상을 설명하는 데 있다. 현대중국어의 ‘AP+(的)+NP’ 구조는 전통적으로 문장 성분과 통사적 기능에 맞춰 주로 ‘수식 관계’로 다뤄져 왔다. 이러한 구조주의적 기술은 간결하고 명확하게 문법 서술을 가능하게 한다는 장점이 있으나 실제 언어에서 관찰되는 다양한 의미해석 현상을 설명하기 어려운 경우가 많다. 이에 먼저 ‘AP+(的)+NP’ 구조를 James Pustejovsky(1995)가 주장한 생성어휘론(Generative Lexicon Theory)의 관점에서 접근하여 전통의 형식적 의미론으로 설명하기 어려운 의미적 불일치와 중의 현상을 설명한다. 그런 다음 ‘유형강제(type coercion)’ 의 유효성을 바탕으로 유형강제 발생 조건과 AP와 NP에 내포된 동사적 요소, 즉 ‘사건(event)’의 속성의 상호작용을 통해 문맥에 적합한 의미를 생성하는 양상에 대해 살펴보고자 한다.

Framed within the theory of Generative Lexicon, this paper offers an in-depth analysis of the “adjective-noun” (Adj-N) structure in Modern Chinese, with a particular focus on issues of semantic inconsistency and ambiguity. Traditional studies have often treated Adj-N structures merely as instances of modification; however, this approach reveals significant limitations when applied to actual language use. To address these shortcomings, this study innovatively introduces the mechanism of “event coercion” from Generative Lexicon Theory. It argues that when there is a type mismatch between the adjective and the noun, the nominal qualia structure is activated to achieve semantic compatibility. In Adj-N structures, event coercion is primarily triggered by adjectives with eventive predicative meanings, necessitating the construction of a corresponding event when combined with a noun to ensure semantic coherence and rationality. Through a detailed examination of the event coercion mechanism within Adj-N structures, this study provides a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the complexity and polysemy inherent in Modern Chinese grammar. The findings offer a new theoretical perspective and methodological approach to linguistic research and contribute to the further advancement of studies on Modern Chinese syntax.
