고대 문헌에서 살펴볼 수 있는 ‘天命’이란, 문자 그대로 ‘天의 명령’으로 통치자의 행위와 결정에 중요한 역할을 하였고, 더욱이 피지배층과 연관시켜 권력의 당위성과 함께 효과적으로 세상을 다스리기 위한 수단으로 적극 활용되었다. ‘天命’이라는 용어는 西周시기 청동기 명문에서 최초로 등장한다. 당시 ‘天’은 특정한 높은 공간이나 존엄한 대상으로 인식되었고, 더욱이 당시 사람들의 의식 속에 거역할 수 없는 중요한 자리를 차지해 역사적으로 매우 중대한 사건이 발생될 때 핵심 역할을 했다. 따라서 ‘天命’이 당시 사회에 어떠한 위치에서 어떠한 영향력을 행사하였고, 점차 어떻게 변화 인식되었는지 살펴보았다. 더욱이 ‘天命’의 주체인 ‘天’이라는 대상의 출처와 실체에 대하여 심도 있게 분석하였다. 종합하면 ‘天命’이란, 명령의 주체를 강조하기 위하여 의도적으로 우회 표현한 어휘로 최초 특정 지역이나 중요 인물이 거주하는 공간으로부터의 절대적 명령을 의미했을 것으로 사료된다. 또한 후대에 점차 天의 의미가 변천 확대되며, 天命을 단순히 초월적 주재자에 의한 명령의 의미로 전환되었고 종교적, 정치적, 도덕적, 철학적 영역으로 발전되어 인식되었다고 판단된다.
