‘사위’와 ‘주사위’에 대한 고찰 — 한중 문헌 및 역사 음운 분석을 통하여

A Study on the “saui” and “jusaui”

본고에서는 한국과 중국의 문헌에 나타난 자료들을 중심으로 사위형 낱말과 근대 중국어의 ‘色兒’ 및 주사위형 낱말과의 음운적, 의미적 관계를 탐구해 보았다. 의미적 연관성과 『中原音韻』에 반영된 근대 시기 중국어의 음운 특징을 고려할 때, 한국어의 사위형 낱말은 근대 중국어의 ‘色兒’을 차용한 것으로 보인다. 비교적 이른 시기의 문헌 속에 보이는 사위형 낱말은 근대 중국어의 ‘色兒’과 상당히 유사한 음가(쇄ᅀᆞ)로 실현되었으나, 시간이 흐를수록 다양한 변이 형태가 출현하게 되었다. ‘쇄ᅀᆞ’는 ‘色兒’의 한국한자음 독서음 체계에 부합하는 음이 아니었기에 언중들은 이 낱말의 연원이 ‘色兒’라는 것을 인식하기 어려웠을 것이고, 이 점은 짧은 시간에 많은 수의 변이 형태가 생성되는 데 결정적인 영향을 미쳤을 것이다. 17-18세기 문헌에는 ‘츄’와 사위형 낱말이 조합된 형식이 등장한다. ‘츄+사위형’ 조합은 본래 주사위류 도구를 사용하여 진행하는 보드게임을 지칭하는 말이었으나 시간이 지남에 따라 ‘츄’ 음이 ‘쥬’로 변화하게 되었다. 그 결과 언중들이 이를 주사위와 의미 상관관계가 높은 한자어 ‘朱’로 인식하게 되면서, 본래 ‘동사+목적어’의 구조였던 ‘츄(>쥬)+사위형’의 형식은 ‘수식어+중심어’의 구조로 재분석되었다. 결국 주사위형 낱말은 사위형 낱말과 동일한 대상을 지칭할 수 있게 되었으며 이는 결과적으로 사위형 낱말이 본래의 의미를 잃고 파생 의미인 주사위류 도구를 던져 얻은 결과의 의미만을 나타내는 것으로 변화하는데 큰 영향을 준 것으로 보인다.

In modern Korean, the word “Jusaui” means dice. Dice is a tool that adds a probabilistic factor through the throwing motion. In terms of adding coincidence through the throwing action, tools such as yut sticks and pencils used to roll pencils are broadly included in the category of dice. In the Joseon Dynasty literature, tools in the category of dice sometimes called as double syllables such as “쇄ᅀᆞ”, “사ᅀᆞ”, “ᄉᆞ애”, “ᄉᆞᄋᆡ”, “ᄉᆞ아”, “ᄉᆞ외”, “사외”, “ᄉᆞ위”(collectively referred to as “saui-type” words in this paper);at other times appeared as three syllables which the “ju” sound is added to the first syllable(collectively referred to as “jusaui-type” words in this paper). The saui-type words seem to have been borrowed from modern Chinese “色兒”. The saui-type words in the literature of relatively early period was realized at a phonetic value that was quite similar to the “色兒” of modern Chinese, but as time passed, various forms emerged. The saui-type words start to appear from the 16th century’s literature, while the jusaui-type words begin to appear from the documents of the 19th century, which is much later than saui-type words, so jusaui-type words seems to have been formed by adding a note called “ju” to the front part based on the saui-type words. This paper explores the phonological and semantic relations between the Saui-type words and “色兒” and Jusaui-type words, focusing on the materials found in Korean and Chinese literature.
