Typological Evolution of Relative Clause in Chinese

Relative clause is a major part of typological study. No matter in OV language or VO language, most relative clauses are addressed after the headnoun, while Chinese is one of those language which belonged to VO language while putting its relative clause in front of the headnoun. Thus it’s very important and valuable for us to study relative clause in Chinese. Particularly in ancient Chinese the development of relative clause is more complicated since there are several language marker to mark relative clause, such as “所(suo)”，“者(zhe)” and “之(zhi)”. This paper comprehensively studied those relative clause types from early ancient Chinese, besides, it also studied the re-union of those three relative clause types and the origin of “底(di)” marked relative clause in early middle Chinese. Furthermore, it also probe into the developing cause and rules of those relative clauses.

關系從句是類型學重要參項之一，但不管OV型語言还是VO型语言，絕大多數是後置於核心名词的,而漢語是極少數VO語序而關系從句前置於核心名詞的語言之一，因此漢語關系從句具有很大的研究價值。尤其是古代漢語關系從句的發展情況更加複雜，存在幾種關系從句標記，如“所”，“者”，“之”。本論文全面考察上古時期這些關系從句的類型，以及其三個關系從句統一的過程與中古時期“底”關系從句的來源，並且探讨這些关系从句發展的動因與機制。
