《Xiandai Hanyu Cidian》 is one of the most popular dictionaries among Chinese people. But it also has some difficulties describing some words and one of these words is “Youyi” The dictionary describes the word “Youyi” as an adjective, and has the meaning of “You Haochu”. Many dictionaries published in China use this definition. However, I do not agree. In Modern Chinese, the word “Youyi” is actually used as an adjective, but there is another use of “Youyi”. According to my research, it can also take an object in some cases. When it takes an object, we can’t classify it as an adjective, because adjectives can’t take objects in Chinese. When “Youyi” takes an object, we should classify it as a transitive verb, and its meaning is no longer “You Haochu”, but it becomes “Dui…You Haochu”. Therefore, I think the word “Youyi” has a double classification of both transitive verb and adjective.
