Haiman(1978) assumed that conditional clauses and topics are marked identically in a number of unrelated languages. The purpose of this paper is to apply this assumption to Classical Chinese and clarify the relation of conditionals and topics. Conditionals and topics are morphologically, logically relevant grammatical categories on cross-linguistic point of view including Classical Chinese. When we take it consideration that the definition of topic itself include conditional implication, the relevance between conditionals and topic is a predictable result. Through analysis of typical topic makers 則ze, 者zhe, 也ye, this paper examine the possibility that topic makers have its origin in grammaticalization of conditionals.
