How Does Technology Reshape the Way of Working? A Literature Review Highlighting Potential Changes Brought by Generative AI and Recommendations for Future Research

역사적으로 범용 기술은 인간이 노동하는 방식과 조직을 꾸리는 방식에 지대한 영향을 미쳐왔다. 이제 인류는 생성형 인공지능(Generative AI) 기술과 마주하고 있다. 본 연구는 기술결정론(Technological Determinism) 관점에서 생성형 인공지능의 급속한 발전이 조직 내 업무 방식에 미치는 영향을 분석한다. 먼저, 산업화 시대 이후 증기기관, 전화기, 타자기, 컴퓨터, 인터넷 등 기술적 변곡점이 업무 수행 방식에 어떠한 변화를 가져왔는지를 역사적 사례로 검토하고, 네 가지 주요 경향성을 도출한다. 즉, 기술은 업무 효율성을 지속해서 높여왔고, 협업 형태를 변화시키며, 직무 가치를 조정했으며, 인간성을 둘러싼 담론을 만들어왔음을 확인하였다. 이를 바탕으로, 생성형 인공지능이 조직 내 정보 탐색과 학습, 아이디어 기획 과정에서 인간을 보완하거나 대체하여 효율성을 극대화하는 한편, 인간 간 대면 상호작용을 줄여 외로움과 단절감을 심화시킬 가능성이 있음을 논의한다. 더 나아가, 이 기술이 루틴 업무뿐만 아니라 창의적⋅인지적 역량이 요구되는 비루틴 업무에도 영향을 미치며, 조직 내 인간의 역할과 가치를 재정의할 가능성을 제시한다. 효율성 관점 7가지 명제와 인간성 관점 2가지 명제, 총 9개의 명제를 향후 연구 과제로 제시함으로써 생성형 인공지능 후속 연구 방향성을 제안한다.

General-purpose technologies have profoundly influenced the ways humans work and organize themselves. Now, humanity is facing generative artificial intelligence (Generative AI). Technologies including the steam engine, telephone, typewriter, computer, and internet revolutionized employees’ methods of working by enhancing efficiency, altering collaboration patterns, and changing job structures. These innovations also fueled debates about human dignity and anxiety. This research examines how generative AI continues these shifts by enabling or even replacing human capabilities in tasks such as data retrieval and idea generation, but may also reduce face-to-face interaction, increasing loneliness and disconnection. Additionally, generative AI extends its impact to non-routine tasks requiring creativity and cognitive skills, possibly redefining the nature of roles within organizations. The study presents ten propositions—eight related to efficiency and two focusing on humanity—and urges further investigation into generative AI’s organizational consequences, including implications for job design and collaboration. These propositions highlight important potential directions for future research.
