Contrary to the belief that the Qieyun Middle Chinese dictionary represented a composite system that adopted phonemic distinctions from two or more dialects, the textual evidence strongly suggests otherwise, i.e., that the Qieyun (601 CE) established its phonological system on the basis of a single living lingua franca of the 6thcentury. The textual variation among the redactions of the Qieyun and between the latter and the Rhyme Tables attest to independent witnesses of the same living language during the time period between the early 7th and the mid-8th centuries.
