The opposition of Zhe and Na in discourse anaphora largely can be attributed to the degree of the antecedent as a topic. Anaphora frequency, anaphora distance, the location of the anaphor, and the competitor, will affect the degree of the antecedent as a topic. The neutralization of Zhe and Na in discourse anaphora essentially reflects the intermediate state of the antecedent as a topic.
