This paper views the landscape of East Asian modernity as ‘translated modernity’ and tries to explore the correlation between geyi(格義) and modern East Asian translated loans by the way how ‘freedom’ and ‘liberty’ were translated into ‘自由’ and this concept was accepted by East Asia. The Modernity of East Asian was ‘translated modernity’, that is modern East Asia understood the Western society and constructed modernity by translation. The problem how to translate new concepts containing the Western civilization and institution was an pressing task given to the intellect of East Asia and translation was the urgent process forming modernity in East Asia. Geyi is the hermeneutic method adopted to explain Indian Buddhistic ideas in Chinese Buddhism borrowing from Daoist and other Chinese philosophical texts phrases. We can examine what is the correlation between geyi and modern East Asian translated loans and how modern East Asian translated loans influenced by geyi through the example of ‘自由’.
