There are a lot of common words in Korean that came from Chinese characters. They are called Chinese-originated words, which can be generally divided into two categories: homomorphic synonyms and homonyms. There are quite a number of Chinese-originated words in Intermediate Chinese, of which homomorphic synonyms constitute an overwhelming majority. As for the homomorphic synonyms, Korean people can understand their meanings directly from the graphics, without being taught; and for those homonyms, they constitute a very small part of words in the Korean language, next to nothing;moreover, their meanings can be correctly understood in certain language context. It should be admitted, then, that it is comparatively easy for Korean people to study Chinese characters. And, the Chinese-originated words play a “positive transfering” role in the study of Chinese by Koreans.
