A Study on the Candarlı Family of the Ottoman Empire

오스만제국의 눈부신 성장에 대해 주로 통치자의 업적에 초점을 맞춘 연구가 진행되었다. 그래서 통치자의 곁에서 보좌하며 국정을 운영한 관료와 유력 가문에 대한 분석은 부족한 실정이다. 이 때문에 본 연구는 오스만제국 건국기 활동한 찬달르(Çandarlı) 가문이 어떠한 역할을 하였는지 살펴보고자 한다. 찬달르 가문은 오스만국이 제국으로 성장하는 과정에서 여러 세대에 걸쳐 재상과 대재상을 역임한 튀르크 귀족 가문이다. 그들은 오스만제국을 개혁, 발전시키며 국정을 운영하였다. 특히 바예지드 1세 사망 이후 발생한 공위기(Interregnum) 시기에는 왕위 계승 구도에 적극 개입하여 제국의 분열을 저지하는 ‘킹메이커’로서정치적 영향력을 행사하였다. 그러나 시간이 흐르면서 그들의 권위는 통치자를 위협하는 수준에 이른다. 이에 메흐메드 2세는 1453년 콘스탄티노폴리스 정복 이후 찬달르 할릴 파샤를 처형하며 술탄의 절대 권력을 재정립한다. 할릴 파샤의 처형으로 찬달르 가문은 몰락하였고 제국 내 권력구조가 새롭게 재편된다. 본 연구는 찬달르 가문의 사례를 통해 오스만제국의 국가 형성과 권력 구조를보다 입체적으로 이해하고자 하였으며, 향후 오스만 정치사에서 통치자 외의 관료집단 및 귀족 가문의 역할을 재조명하는 연구의 확장을 기대한다.

Studies on the remarkable expansion of the Ottoman Empire have primarily focused on the achievements of its rulers. Consequently, analyses of bureaucrats and influential families who assisted the sovereigns in governing the state remain insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to examine the role played by the Çandarlı family, which was active during the formative period of the Ottoman Empire. The Çandarlı family was a Turkish noble lineage that, across several generations, held the offices of vizier and grand vizier during the Empire’s transition from a principality to a centralized imperial state. They reformed, developed, and administered the Ottoman government. Particularly during the Interregnum that followed the death of Bayezid I, they actively intervened in the struggle for succession to prevent the fragmentation of the Empire, exerting political influence as “kingmakers.” However, over time, their authority grew to the point of threatening the sovereignty of the ruler. In response, following the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Mehmed II executed Çandarlı Halil Pasha and reestablished absolute sultanic authority. The execution led to the downfall of the Çandarlı family and the reconfiguration of the imperial power structure. By examining the Çandarlı family, this study seeks to provide a more multidimensional understanding of state formation and power structures in the Ottoman Empire. It further anticipates the expansion of research that re-evaluates the roles of bureaucratic elites and noble families beyond the rulers in the political history of the Ottomans.
