Athletic mental energy (AME) is a burgeoning area of inquiry within sports science. Lu et al. (2018) adopted the framework established by the International Life Science Institute (ILSI) to conceptualize AME. They used six studies to develop and validate a sport-specific 18-item, 6-factor measure termed the “Athletic Mental Energy Scale” (AMES). After seven years of development, the AMES has been studied in 14 countries and has been cited in 58 scholarly articles. In this paper, I will synthesize these studies and report how athletic mental energy influences athletes’ cognition, affect, and performance.
