체육전공 외국인 유학생의 학과 적응에 대한 내러티브: 유학생이 바라본 학문적 매력성과 실제적 기여에 대한 탐색

A Narrative Inquiry into Departmental Adaptation among International Students Majoring in Physical Education: Exploring Academic Appeal and Practical Contributions from the Student Perspective

본 연구는 체육이라는 학문 분야가 외국인 유학생에게 어떤 매력 요소가 있고 실제 생활에 기여 하는지를 규명하는데 목적이 있다. 이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 경기도와 충청남도에 소재한 4년제 대학 학위과정(학사, 석사)에 재학 중인, 한국입국 4년차, 8년차 된 베트남, 우즈베키스탄 국적의 체육 전공 유학생을 연구 대상자를 선정하였다. 이들을 대상으로 2024년 3월부터 2025년 8월까지 참여 관찰과 심층 면담 방법을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 내러티브 연구 방법을 통해 분석하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학과 적응 초기 낮은 형식의 언어와 입학 장벽과 높은 비형식적 장벽이 공존하는 문화 적응의 ‘이중성’이 나타났다. 둘째, 체육 전공이라는 특수성이 반영되어 학과 활동과 생계 병행이 충돌해 초기 적응의 장애 요소로 작용하였다. 셋째, 교과 외 학과 생활이 정서적 교류와 심리적 지지를 만들고 학과 문화를 체화시켜 학과 적응의 회복 과정으로 전환된다. 넷째, 전공의 교실 밖 활동과 이미지는 한국에서의 사회적 확장과 문화 적응을 촉진하는 기재로 작용한다. 다섯째, 긍정적인 전공 경험은 한국에서의 정주, 진로 설계에서 핵심 판단 기준이 되고 유학을 준비하는 유학생에게 전수되게 된다.

This study applies a narrative inquiry to identify what makes physical education (PE) academically attractive to international students and how the major contributes to their everyday lives in Korea. Participants were PE majors from Vietnam and Uzbekistan enrolled in bachelor’s and master’s programs at four-year universities in Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheongnam-do; they had resided in Korea for approximately 4 and 8 years, respectively. Data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews from March 2024 to August 2025, and analyzed using narrative methods. Findings are as follows. First, an adaptive “duality” emerged: low formal thresholds at entry (language and admissions) coexisted with high informal cultural barriers after matriculation, driven by face-to-face, practice-heavy learning and implicit norms. Second, the work–study conflict—stemming from PE’s activity intensity and students’ need to engage in part-time work—functioned as an early obstacle to academic adjustment. Third, co-curricular engagement (team practices, clubs, field/seasonal intensives) shifted from burden to resource, fostering emotional exchange, psychological support, and the embodiment of departmental culture, thereby enabling recovery and adaptation. Fourth, PE’s extraclass identity and visibility facilitated social network expansion and cultural adaptation in Korean society. Fifth, positive major experiences became a core criterion in decisions about longer-term stay and career design in Korea and were intentionally shared with prospective international students as practical guidance.
