중국인 유학생의 유학 동기, 취업 및 정주 경험에 대한 내러티브 탐구

A Narrative Inquiry into Chinese International Students’ Study Abroad Motivation, Employment, and Settlement Experiences in Korea

본 연구는 한국에서 학업을 마치고 국내에 정주한 중국인 유학생 3명의 이야기를 내러티브 탐구로 분석하여, 유학 동기가 체류 과정에서 어떻게 재구성되고 취업 및 정주 결정이 어떤 경험 속에서 이루어지는지를 밝혔다. 개별·집단 심층 면담을 통해 서사를 재구성한 결과, 초기의 학업·가족·문화적 동기는 체류와 경험을 거치며 취업과 정주로 전환되었고, 사회적 관계망과 제도·경제 환경이 이 과정에 영향을 미쳤으며, 한국 사회에서 형성된 심리적 안정감과 소속감이 장기 정주로 이어짐을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 외국인 유학생 경험을 학업·진로·이주 과정으로 통합적으로 조망하며, 한국어 교육과 정책에서 유학생 지원 체계를 더욱 연계적으로 마련할 필요성을 제시한다.

This study employs a narrative inquiry approach to examine the experiences of three Chinese students who completed their studies in Korea and subsequently secured employment and settled there. It explores how their initial motivations for studying abroad evolved over time and how employment and settlement decisions were shaped through lived experiences. Individual and group in-depth interviews were conducted and analyzed using a three-dimensional narrative inquiry framework. Findings show that initial motivations—such as academic goals, family expectations, and cultural interest—shifted toward employment and long-term settlement as participants accumulated experiences in Korea. Social networks and emotional support facilitated academic adaptation and career development, while structural factors including visa policies, labor market conditions, and Korea–China relations influenced their trajectories. A sense of stability and belonging ultimately fostered their intention to remain in Korea. This study highlights the need for integrated support connecting academic, career, and settlement pathways for international students.
