An Analysis of Generative AI Effectiveness in Translating Tourism Content: Focusing on Jeonju Tourist Sites

This study investigates the effectiveness of generative AI in translating tourism texts by comparing official English descriptions on the Visit Jeonju website with AI-generated translations of the same Korean source material. Focusing on Jeondong Cathedral, a prominent heritage site in Jeonju Hanok Village, the study evaluates both English versions across four dimensions: clarity, naturalness, perceived accuracy, and overall quality. Thirty-six international students in Korea—most with intermediate or higher English proficiency and prior translation experience—rated each text under both single-presentation and paired-comparison conditions using Likert-type scales. Repeated-measures ANOVAs revealed that the AI translation received significantly higher scores for clarity, naturalness, and overall quality, while no significant difference emerged for perceived accuracy. Paired-comparison t-tests likewise favored the AI translation for clarity and overall quality, though effect sizes remained modest. Qualitative feedback indicated that participants appreciated the AI text’s smoother flow and reader-friendly structure, whereas the website text was perceived as more detailed and authoritative. These findings suggest that generative AI can serve as a practical tool for tourism translation, particularly when resources are limited, but they also underscore the ongoing need for expert review to ensure cultural fidelity and factual precision.
