This paper aims to explore the direction of second foreign language education in high schools. A questionnaire regarding Japanese language selection was conducted among 110 students out of 171 second-year students at H High School who chose Japanese as their second foreign language. The survey consisted of 30 questions and was analyzed across five categories. The results, summarized based on answers with high proportions, are as follows: The main reasons for choosing Japanese as a second foreign language in high school were that it is relatively easier to learn compared to other languages, students had high interest in learning Japanese, and they held a positive image of Japan. It was also found that students intend to study Japanese in depth if given the opportunity in the future, and have high expectations for improving their Japanese proficiency through their high school Japanese selection. Furthermore, beyond Japanese classes, students most frequently utilize Japanese dramas, animation, and movies for their Japanese learning, and through these, they are working to improve their Japanese proficiency. Moreover, the ability that the students most wish to improve in Japanese class is conversational (speaking) skill. They prefer a teaching style centered on real-life practical conversations and listening practice, and they most desire performance assessments focused on speaking and listening. In class, students also wish to learn more about various Japanese cultures such as animation, manga, J-pop, and video games. They hope for the provision of individualized, customized teaching materials that match their learning level and seek motivation for Japanese learning through engaging and interesting lesson content. It was also found that their goal is to learn practical conversations useful for travel to Japan in class and to raise their language proficiency to a level where basic communication in Japanese is possible.
