A Study on Naoko Awa’s Yukimado : A Story that Weaves “Fulfilment”

In this study, I analyse Naoko Awa’s short story “The Snow Window” (1972) and present a new interpretation of the work. Previous studies on this literary work have mostly focussed on the themes of “death” and “dialogue with the dead”. However, the work’s potential to move its readers cannot be fully explained based on keywords such as “death”, “the dead”, and “dialogue with the dead”. This study, therefore, sheds light on the fact that an important element of the work lies in the layering of each main character’s “fulfilment”. It also follows the flow of the story in showing how these “fulfilments” are expressed and how they lead the reader to be moved. Furthermore, it reveals that these “fulfilments” are connected through selfless acts for others, that is, “gifts”, and operate in tandem; these aspects constitute the most distinctive feature of the work. “The Snow Window” is a story where one “fulfilment” is linked to the next through “gifts”, and its power to move readers springs precisely from this content and structure.

本研究は安房直子の短編作品｢雪窓｣(1972)を対象に考察を加え、新しい解釈を示すものである。｢雪窓｣に関する先行研究の多くは作中における ｢死｣や｢死者との対話｣というテーマに着目している。しかしながら、作品の持つ、読者を感動させる力について考察する場合、｢死｣や｢死者｣、｢死者との対話｣といったキーワードでは充分に説明しつくすことはできない。そこで本研究では同作を成立させる重要な要素として、主要登場人物たちのそれぞれの｢成就｣が重ねられている点に光を当て、それらの｢成就｣がどのように表現されているのか、そしてそれらがどのように読者を感動へと導いていくのかについて、ストーリーの流れに沿いながら論証する。また、それらの｢成就｣が、相手に対する無償の行為、すなわち｢ギフト｣によってつながれており、互いに連動していることも明らかにして、そこに同作最大の特長があることを指摘する。｢雪窓｣は｢成就｣を｢ギフト｣によってつないでゆく物語なのであり、そのような内容、構造こそが読者を感動させる力の源泉なのである。
