인문사회과학 분야의 AI활용 질적연구에 대한 질적메타분석: 해외연구를 중심으로

A Qualitative Meta-Analysis of AI Applications in Qualitative Research within the Humanities and Social Sciences: Focusing on Foreign Research

본 연구는 질적 자료 분석 과정에서 인공지능(AI)을 활용한 해외 질적연구물들을 대상으로 질적 메타분석을 목적으로 한다. 최근 인문사회과학 분야에서 AI의 도입이 활발해지고 있음에도 불구하고, 그 활용 양상과 의미에 대한 총체적 이해는 아직 충분히 정리되지 않았다는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 2020년부터 2025년 3월까지 해외 학술지에 게재된 총 17편의 연구를 분석 대상으로 삼아 분석을 진행하였다. 이를 통해 질적연구에서 AI 활용이 어떠한 방식으로 이루어지고 있으며, 그것이 연구 방법론과 연구자의 성찰에 어떠한 함의를 주는지를 체계적으로 고찰하였다. 이 연구의 패러다임은 신유물론(New Materialism)과 객체지향존재론(Object Oriented Ontology)에 기초를 둔다. 이 관점에서 AI가 단순한 도구적 매개체를 넘어 의미 생성 과정에 관여하는 행위자로 이해될 수 있는 계기가 형성된다. 연구 방법은 질적 메타분석의 절차를 적용하여 개별 연구물의 결과와 과정을 교차 검토하고, 반복적 비교를 통해 핵심 범주를 도출하였다. 분석 결과, 질적연구에서의 AI 활용은 크게 ‘AI의 기능적 활용’, ‘관계적 협력’, ‘존재론적･윤리적 성찰’ 세 가지 차원에서 드러났다. 이러한 핵심 주제는 다시 여섯 가지의 세부 주제로 구체화되었으며, 이를 통해 AI 활용이 단순히 기술적 효율성의 차원을 넘어 질적연구의 인식론적･방법론적 지평을 확장하고 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 질적연구 방법론에서 AI 활용의 의미를 통합적으로 조망함으로써, 향후 인문사회과학 연구에서 AI와 인간의 협력적 관계를 새롭게 구상하는 데 기여할 수 있다. 또한 AI가 도입됨으로써 발생하는 철학적･윤리적 과제를 성찰적으로 검토함으로써, 질적연구의 미래 방향성을 논의하는 데 중요한 시사점을 제공한다.

This study aims to conduct a qualitative meta-analysis of overseas qualitative research that has employed artificial intelligence (AI) in the process of qualitative data analysis. Despite the increasing adoption of AI in the humanities and social sciences in recent years, there remains a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the patterns and meanings of its use. Based on this awareness, this study analyzed a total of 17 articles published in international academic journals between 2020 and March 2025. Through this, it systematically examined how AI has been utilized in qualitative research and what methodological and reflective implications it provides for researchers. The study applied the procedures of qualitative meta-analysis, cross- examining the findings and processes of individual studies and deriving core categories through iterative comparison. The analytical framework was established on the basis of key discourses in the humanities and social sciences that explore the relationship between humans and nonhumans (AI), specifically new materialism and object-oriented ontology. Drawing on these philosophical perspectives, the analysis focused on whether AI can be understood not merely as a technical intermediary but as an active participant in the process of meaning-making. The results revealed that the use of AI in qualitative research emerged in three major dimensions: functional utilization of AI, relational collaboration, and ontological and ethical reflection. These themes were further elaborated into six subcategories, demonstrating that AI use extends beyond the realm of technical efficiency and contributes to expanding the epistemological and methodological horizons of qualitative research. By providing an integrated perspective on the meaning of AI utilization in qualitative inquiry, this study contributes to reimagining the collaborative relationship between humans and AI in future research within the humanities and social sciences. Furthermore, by critically reflecting on the philosophical and ethical challenges introduced by AI, it offers important insights for discussing the future directions of qualitative research.
