불가리아어, 마케도니아어 명사구 한정성의 문법화: 개념 유형과 한정성 위계 분석

The Grammaticalization of Nominal Definiteness in Bulgarian and Macedonian: An Analysis based on Concept Types and Definiteness Hierarchy

본고에서는 불가리아어, 마케도니아어의 문어 및 구어 텍스트에 사용된 한정적 명사구를 개념 유형과 한정성(Concept Types and Determination) 이론의 한정성 위계에 따라 구분하고, 명사구 한정성 문법화 정도를 고찰하였다. 그 결과 두 발칸 슬라브어의 후치정관사는 매우 높은 수준으로 문법화되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 우선 담화 내에서 획득한 모든 화용적 한정성 (직시, 대용, 관계절 피수식, 관계적 연상 대용, 부분-전체 연상 대용)과 명사에 미리 부여된 의미적 한정성 중 유일성 명사 및 유일성 수식어 결합 표현에서 필수적이고, 몇몇 고유명사에서도 사용이 필수적이다. 또한 불가리아어, 마케도니아어 후치정관사는 몇몇 다른 유럽어 정관사보다 사용 영역이 넓다. 첫째, 영어에서 정관사 대신 소유격으로 한정성을 표시하는 경우, 불가리아어, 마케도니아어는 장형 소유형용사 및 단형 소유 여격에 후치정관사가 동반되는 것이 일반적이다. 둘째, 영어에서 소유격으로 한정되는 신체 부위를 두 발칸 슬라브어에서는 후치정관사로만 표시하는 것이 가능하다. 셋째, 영어에서 대체로 정관사를 동반하지 않는 총칭명사, 추상명사, 물질명사의 경우, 불가리아어, 마케도니아어에서는 문두의 주어 및 화제 위치에서 후치정관사 동반이 필수적이다.

This article examines the grammaticalization of nominal definiteness in Bulgarian and Macedonian, analyzing these Balkan Slavic definite noun phrases used in written and spoken texts and classifying them according to the definiteness hierarchy of the Concept Types and Determination theory. The results show that postpositional definite articles in these Balkan Slavic languages are grammaticalized at a very high level. First of all, definite articles in these languages are obligatory in all cases of pragmatic definiteness obtained by a referent familiarized in the discourse (i.e. by deixis, anaphora, associative anaphora, and relative clauses), and in some cases of semantic definiteness inherent to some unique referents when a noun or its modifier insinuate its referent’s uniqueness. They also can be a determiner for some proper nouns. In addition, Bulgarian and Macedonian postpositional definite articles are even used more widely than some other European definite articles. First, in a context when an English possessive pronoun rather than a definite article modifies a noun, the Bulgarian and Macedonian postpositional definite articles are added to possessive adjectives or possessive dative enclitics. Second, body part terms which are modified by possessive pronouns in English can accompany postpositional definite articles in both Balkan Slavic languages. Third, as for generic, abstract or material nouns which do not prefer a definiteness marker in English, they accompany a postpositional definite article, especially if they are the subject or the topic located at the beginning of the sentence in Bulgarian and Macedonian sentences.
