Yuri Trifonov’s Prose: From Everyday Life to Being, from History to the Present

본 연구는 유리 트리포노프의 산문에서 ‘역사/현대성’과 ‘일상(быт)/존재(бытие)’의 이원대립이 실은 상호매개적 관계망으로 재구성됨을 밝힌다. 트리포노프의 작품 전반에는 역사성이 두 양상—역사적 사건에 대한 서술과 동시대 인물들의 기억·회상—으로 일관되게 관철되며, 작가는 생활을 ‘도덕적 존재를 조건 짓는 일상’으로 폭넓게 이해한다. 겉보기에 역사는 영웅성과 운명(존재)에, 현대성은 일상과 가치 상실에 대응하는 듯하지만, 그의 서사는 이러한 도식을 해체한다. 배신과 왜곡을 포함한 ‘문제적 과거’가 현재를 구성하며, 과거에 대한 태도와 기억 행위는 개인의 운명과 도덕적 자기구성을 규정한다. 동시에 생활의 세부들은 각 시대의 역사적 국면을 판독하는 지표로 기능하고, 욕망되는 편의와 물질적 이익은 ‘감정의 내면화’를 통해서만 정당화된다. 따라서 생활은 개별 인물의 존재에 이르는 인식 경로이며, 개인의 존재는 동시대의 얼굴을 형성하고, 동시대는 누적되어 역사로 이행한다. 이 과정에서 ‘생활 대 존재’, ‘역사 대 현대성’의 안토니미는 ‘상호 이해’의 선형적 대비로 전환된다. 트리포노프는 독단적 판단을 보류하고 질문의 틀—역사(기억/과거), 현대성, 생활(일상의 기쁨과 슬픔), 존재(도덕·영적 원리)—을 제시하며, 독자의 응답 가능성을 열어 둔다. 작품의 시간적 수용 또한 변동하며, 한때의 ‘시의성’은 다른 시대에 ‘역사성’으로 환원될 수 있음을 「학생들(Студенты)」의 사례가 보여 준다. 본 초록은 이러한 범주들의 교직을 통해 트리포노프 서사의 인식론적 핵심이 ‘기억을 매개로 한 생활-존재-역사-현대성의 상호번역성’에 있음을 제안한다.

This study argues that Yuri Trifonov’s prose is organized by a dynamic interplay among four categories—history, modern contemporaneity, everyday life (byt), and being (bytie)—which continually intersect and are rearranged across his oeuvre. History in Trifonov appears either as direct narration of historical events or, more characteristically, through the recollections of contemporaries whose memories mediate the past into the present. The paper contends that everyday detail functions as an index for reading history: small material signs and routine choices disclose a character’s ethical and spiritual structure. In this framework, memory becomes a cognitive path that grasps both past and present and opens a horizon toward the future. The essay reassesses the common surface-level dichotomy—history as heroic being vs. modernity as eroding everydayness—and demonstrates that Trifonov systematically dissolves such binaries. In The House on the Embankment, for example, recollective form shows how seemingly minor moral decisions under Stalinism configure present life-worlds and social bonds, while Students illustrates how a text once “topical” in one epoch can sediment into historical fact in another. Crucially, Trifonov withholds unequivocal judgments: humans both make history and are constrained by it; they shape everyday life and are also shaped by its constraints. Rather than supplying answers, Trifonov furnishes well-posed questions and a conceptual coordinate system—history/memory, contemporaneity, everyday life, and being—within which inquiry proceeds. Read in this light, his prose tests the complementarity of these categories and invites readers to think historical being through remembered everydayness.
