영화 ｢악령｣에 나타난 나비의 모티프 연구

A Study on the Motif of Butterflies in ｢The Demons｣

본 논문은 도스토옙스키의 소설 『악령』을 토대로 하여 제작된 블라지미르 호티넨코 감독의 영화 「악령」에 나타난 나비의 모티프를 고찰하는 것을 그 목적으로 한다. 감독은 도스토옙스키의 창작노트에 제시된 나비(과도기적인 존재)에 주목하여 주인공 스타브로긴의 형상화에서 나비를 중요한 소재로 적극 활용한다. 영화에서 나비는 주인공 스타브로긴을 상징한다. 즉 나비는 미와 추를 간직한 존재이자 성과 속의 공간을 자유롭게 왕래하는 존재로서 주인공 스타브로긴의 악마적인 아름다움과 비열함, 선과 악을 대변해 주는 존재이다. 스타브로긴은 나비처럼 겉으로 화려한 외모를 지니며 매력을 발산하여 주변 인물들을 유혹하여 파멸시키지만 자신은 타인을 바라보고 배려하고 사랑하는 것이 아니라 나비 채집과 연구에 몰두하고 나비 표본 만드는 일에 최선을 다한다. 나비 표본은 불멸을 향한 스타브로긴의 욕망을 상징한다. 스타브로긴은 필멸의 미적 존재인 나비를 박제화하여 불멸의 존재로 만들고자 한다. 뿐만 아니라 그는 고백록을 남기고 편지를 남겨 누군가 자신을 영원히 기억해 주기를 바란다. 하지만 나비 표본을 담은 액자는 깨어지고 고백을 적은 쪽지는 불태워지고 만다. 영화의 마지막 장면에서 다리야는 스타브로긴의 남은 나비 표본 액자를 간직하고 그의 아들을 키우며 그를 기억하고 있음을 암시하는데 이는 불멸은 자신이 만드는 것이 아니라 누군가에 의해 기억되고 만들어지는 것임을 보여준다.

This paper aims to examine the motif of the butterfly in the film ｢The Demons｣ directed by Vladimir Khotinenko, based on Dostoevsky’s novel ｢The Demons｣. The director actively utilizes the butterfly as an important material in the depiction of the main character Stavrogin, paying attention to the butterfly (a transitional being) presented in Dostoevsky’s creative notes. In the film, the butterfly symbolizes the main character Stavrogin. In other words, the butterfly is a being that possesses beauty and ugliness and a being that freely moves between the space of the castle and the inner space, representing the demonic beauty and meanness, good and evil of the main character Stavrogin. Stavrogin has a flashy appearance like a butterfly and radiates charm, seducing and destroying those around him, but he does not look at, care for, or love others, but devotes himself to collecting and studying butterflies and making butterfly specimens. The butterfly specimen symbolizes Stavrogin’s desire for immortality. Stavrogin wants to make butterflies, which are mortal aesthetic beings, immortal by stuffing them. He also leaves behind a confession and a letter, hoping that someone will remember him forever. However, the frame containing the butterfly specimen breaks and the note containing the confession is burned. In the last scene of the film, Darya keeps Stavrogin's remaining butterfly specimen frame and raises his son, implying that she remembers him, showing that immortality is not something you create yourself, but something you are remembered and created by someone else.
